In the 2017 Leadership Institute session Strengthening the Small Church, Ed McCallum offered several reasons some churches are small. Among them are:

• Some churches are small because the leaders want to hold on to power. The effect is that there is no room to grow.
• Some churches are small simply because of the community or demographics. They are not doing anything wrong, in fact they are doing small church well.
• Some churches are small because they are not yet large.
